Amazing Grace
(Gaborone, Botswana)
Because she cannot see, she walks
(for three sons and a daughter)
four miles each way,
eight miles a day,
saving the cost of kombis
to and from work.
Because we will not see, she walks...
and her three sons and a daughter
don’t use condoms.
Julie Craig is originally from the US, but currently resides with her husband and her son in the UK, where her teaching English provides Transformers with a happy new home. Her work largely reflects her global
meanderings, both in life and literature. Having appeared in the US,
UK, Ireland, Southern Africa and on the internet, Julie's prose and
poetry often contain wry commentary or an appreciation of the absurd,
from whatever culture or circumstance that she has experienced. Her
American roots are reflected in her concise expression and provide the
filter through which her perceptions are sifted. The accent, though,
tends to wander nearly as much as she has.
