According to Pablo Neruda

Poetry, an action, fleeting and formal


emotion, action, nearness to self, nearness to others, to nature —

these are the equal partners of your verse

in which brotherhood is not denied but sustained


the reality and the dream commingling

and all paths leading to the same goal —


passing through solitude and difficulty

and reaching the enchanted place


dancing, singing, clumsily and awkward yet hopeful


these are the ritual of the race, the rites of consciousness


this is the destiny we each aspire to

this is what makes us what we are
