Submissions Guidelines Print E-mail

We are delighted with your interest in Projected Letters. Following are our submissions guidelines.

We accept: fiction, poetry, non-fiction (essays, long reviews, articles, journalism, science, history, philosophy etc.). And we also publish artwork and photography. Please send this material in a very compressed format, so as not to clog our inboxes. if we like what we see, we'll request some high-format versions to work on. Contact us and let us know you'd like to submit the work, give a brief synopsis and we'll be in touch.

We don't pay. Or get paid. There's always the "yet," but really the zine business isn't the most lucrative. We really do this for the love of it.

You retain sole copyright to your work.

However, if your work has been published by us for the first time, and we have edited or otherwise amended it in concert with you, please list us as the first place of publication. We can't demand you do, but we will likely remove your work from the site if: a) you republish this work within six months on a different site, and b) do not reference Projected Letters (or projectedletters.com) as the first point of publication. This is pretty standard stuff.

We prefer Original work. We occasionally republish work, but we don't take kindly to taking the time to mark work up, proof it, and at times edit it, only to find it has been published in different venues recently. There's little point in championing new and established writers if that writer's story or poem appears everywhere else at the same time. We know it's a way of padding your bio — but frankly, if you don't have the material, don't publish. As above, if we find this has happened, we'll remove the work and any trace of you from the site. As this has happened many times over the course of our journal careers, our patience has run thin. Please think before you submit: we now do a regular web search before and after publication.

We also accept translations from any original language— as long as you have the permission (if relevant) of the appropriate parties. You must be fluent in English and be willing to work with an editor.

You should send a maximum of two short stories and four poems, unless those poems are part of a series and cannot be split up.

If you are sending essays or reviews, please make them authoritative and professional. We prefer to publish long reviews of books and events, and any articles must be backed up by professional quotation or be based on sound research and judgement. In other words, we expect the best. There is no limit to the size of a review or article.

Please expect to be edited. We wish to present very high quality writing and will edit your work according to our own best practices. We also prefer to work with you, so if you are too busy to make changes or work with an editor, think twice before submitting.

Copyright Law applies to the internet. We can't accept responsibility for plagiarism or breaches of copyright law on your part. If you are in doubt, please read our legal pages.

You are also responsible for fallacious or defamatory remarks which may result in litigation.

By Submitting to or contacting Projected Letters you implicitly agree to publication in any and all forms at the editors' discretion. This is, of course, within reason: we won't abuse your confidentiality or trust.

This relates to (but not exclusively): fiction, non-fiction, poetry, reviews, letters, email correspondence, art-work, photography and any other medium you submit to us.

We will endeavor to respond to you within two months. If we haven't responded to you within three months, please feel free to contact us again and request the status of your submission(s)/communication.

If you have any questions, please contact us.

When you submit, please write the subject-line as follows: 'SUBMISSION: (name of your piece)'.

Don't be put off by the strict tone — we have to be clear in our guidelines to avoid confusion.

We're looking forward to hearing from you!

The Editors.

LEGAL

The following copyright rules govern secondary reproduction of material first published in Projected Letters as well as the submission of original works, works in translation, and either of these with any and all supplementary material that exists outside of the public domain to Projected Letters.

1) Any contact between a) original authors or visual/other artists and Projected Letters, b) translators and Projected Letters, or c) parties who wish to reproduce work that appears in Projected Letters occurs with the understanding that these guidelines are being followed, and is binding. These rules exist to protect the contemporary writers, artists and translators whose work we display, and the copyright holders of all material that exists outside of the public domain. The responsibility for following these regulations lies with the submitter(s) of work to Projected Letters, or the reproducer(s) of original work that appears in Projected Letters secondary to initial publication in Projected Letters. Submitting original work of all kinds and/or writing in translation, as well as reproducing original work of all kinds and/or work in translation is tantamount to a signed contract acknowledging the copyright guidelines in accordance with the Berne Convention.

2) If we display visual material or quotation of work that already exists within the public domain we will always cite the source of this material if known. This holds true both for Projected Letters' use of material as an independently designed body, and of visual material/quotation as supplement to work featured in Projected Letters. The display of visual material or quotation by an individual copyright holder will be dealt with according to the Berne Convention.

3) In every instance of original writing or visual art appearing in Projected Letters, copyright belongs to the writer(s) and/or translator(s) and/or artists; and the specific details of copyright possession will have been established prior to submission to and acceptance by Projected Letters. No reproduction of material in Projected Letters is acceptable without express permission from the copyright holder(s), which must be obtained through Projected Letters.

4) If you are interested in reproducing anything in Projected Letters contact the editors first with the words 'reproduction request' in the subject line of the email. The editors will communicate with the writer(s) on your behalf, and the nature of further contact will be determined individually from that point.

5) Projected Letters will never knowingly use writing without the express permission of the copyright holder(s). In the case of work in translation, the translator must receive permission from the writer(s), and we will work with the translator(s) with the understanding that such permission has been granted. We publish work on the condition that prior permission has been granted for reproduction and/or translation, if such considerations are still legally binding. This is particularly important because the editors of Projected Letters may suggest or insist upon editorial changes in the form of copy and/or line edits in the case of translations as well as in original works submitted by the original author(s)/artist(s); there is also the possibility of structural editing if Projected Letters is the first publisher of original work submitted in English by the author(s), or if said work constitutes a previously published but resubmitted work.

6) As with all journals, we are delighted for citation to occur with appropriate documentation; and there is no need to contact us about this.

7) THIS IS IMPERATIVE: If we see any of the work which appears on Projected Letters reproduced in whole or significant part in any form on any medium without the author's express permission, we will act on the author's behalf to take full legal action against you. This includes reviews.

8) Claiming ignorance of these guidelines is no excuse for breaking the agreement. You can clearly access this page from anywhere on the Projected Letters website. Copyright is clearly assigned to each individual author on each page.

If you have questions regarding copyright issues not addressed here, please feel free to contact the editors with the words 'copyright question' in the subject line of the email.
